I can't imagine buying Cabinet Vision unless it was truly needed for a business that was making a lot of money. The license works with a USB dongle that must be physically plugged in to run the program. It's over $30 K to get the Cadillac version with CNC output. I think it was somewhere in the $5 to $8 K range for the one license. We have a mid level version (Solid Advanced) without the CNC module. My current company is using an out of date version on a perpetual license because it's expensive to upgrade. I haven't been involved in a Cabinet Vision purchase in awhile.

But you couldn't easily use it for anything other than cabinets. It does submittal drawings, bids, cut lists, CNC programs and all aspects are highly customizable. There's a lot you can do with Cabinet Vision once you learn how all the features work. It's actually very intuitive and easy to learn at a basic level, so you can be productive before going on and learning all the power user stuff. You don't draw with it, you just drag and drop objects from libraries to build cabinet layouts.

It's a parametric cabinet modeling program, and that's all it does. I know of at least seven running Cabinet Vision.Ĭabinet Vision is it's own beast, unlike any Autodesk Programs or Solidworks. I know of two shops locally that run microvellum. In my experience working for custom cabinet shops in the SF Bay Area, cabinet vision is a little more popular than microvellum. It wasn't my choice as much as something I fell into based on job availability. What’s the average cost of a seat license of each? Which one has less of a learning curve to master? If you had to recommend one software over the other, which do you prefer? What software do you feel is more prevalent in the industry? I also understand programming in principle, but other than some very basic stuff I haven’t been actively using Master CAM or anything. I am well versed in Solidworks, Inventor, and AutoCAD, but I haven’t worked with either software. I’m seeing a lot of the Arch Millwork and Custom Cabinetry based companies using either Micro Vellum or Cabinet Vision. Most of my experience in my career has been in the furniture industry, but recently I have been gaining more experience in Architectural Millwork and case goods, and I want to explore the Architectural Millwork industry more, especially with the strength of the industry where I am currently living. I’m currently looking for work right now and while I have the down time I figure it may be a good idea to do some training on new software if I can through a trial.
